+++++++++++++++

MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Hebrews 11:6 NIV
Discuss how faith motivates believers to earnestly seek God. Read the verse together several times as a class and then ask volunteers to recite it by memory.
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
Jesus instructs the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of Him, while he stays behind to dismiss the crowds and to pray. It is nearly morning and the disciples are still struggling to reach the other side. Their progress is slow due to the wind and waves that are tossing them around on the sea. The disciples are terrified when they think they see a ghost approaching their boat.
Read Matthew 14:22-33 (Jesus Walks on Water)
Discussion Questions:
1. Why didn't Jesus get in the boat and leave with His disciples? (He stayed behind to dismiss the crowds and to pray.)
2. Why were the disciples having such a hard time getting to the other side? (The wind and waves made it difficult.)
3. The disciples thought they saw a ghost, why didn't they recognize it was Jesus? (They didn't expect to see Jesus walking on the water.)
4. Did Peter fail because he took a few steps and began to sink? (No.)
5. Did the other disciples who wouldn't even attempt to leave the safety of the boat lack courage? Why or why not? (Allow for answers.)
6. Why did Peter begin to sink into the water? (He took his focus off the Lord, saw the wind and became afraid.)
7. What did Jesus do when Peter cried out, "Lord, save me!" (Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.)
8. Do we always recognize the Lord's presence as life’s storms are tossing us around? (Allow for answers.)

APPLICATION (3 minutes)
It may not always be easy to recognize the Lord in the middle of life's storms; however, Jesus is always there for us, willing to reach out and save us when we cry out for help. None of us has been asked to walk on water, but there will be times in life when our faith is tested. Life will not always be easy, let your faith in God help keep you afloat during the difficult periods in your life. What cool things could we do, if we trusted Jesus enough to step out of our boat, out of our comfort zone?
