Recite this verse aloud, several times as a class. Ask volunteers to share what this scripture means to them and how these words can help them through the storms in their lives.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Today’s lesson will show the authority that Jesus had over the earth. As we read the story, remember what Jesus said in Matthew 28:18, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” As we begin reading, Jesus had just finished speaking to the multitudes.

Read Mark 4:35-41 (Jesus Calms the Storm)

Discussion Questions:

1. Where was Jesus during the storm? (In the stern, or back, of the boat, asleep.)

2. Why do you think Jesus was asleep? (He was probably tired from preaching to the crowd.)

3. How was Jesus able to calm the storm, miraculously? (He commanded it to be still, as He has all authority over heaven and earth. See Matthew 28:18.)

4. Why do you think the disciples were so afraid and had no faith? (Answers may vary. They were focused on the storm. The disciples may have attempted to remove the water themselves. They did not turn to Jesus until the boat began to sink.)

5. What would you have done if you were one of the disciples in the boat during this storm? (Allow for discussion.)

6. Let’s review the memory verse. How is this verse similar to the story we just read? (Allow for discussion.)

7. How should we handle the storms in our lives? (Allow children to share their answers.)

APPLICATION (2 minutes)

In today's lesson, we've learned once again, that nothing is impossible for Jesus. Everything is under His control. All of us will face storms in our lives, but take heart and have faith, because Jesus is able to calm the turbulent times of our lives just as He calmed the storm for the disciples. When we call out to the Lord, in faith, we will see miracles in our lives as well.
